If you are having sex with one or more partners, then you need to be concerned and know about Sexually Transmitted Infections(STIs). Regardless of your age or number of partners, it is important to know the facts.
More than half of all people will have an STI/STD at some point. There are two main facts that you need to be aware of:
- Condoms don’t eliminate the risk – they only reduce it.
- Most people with an STD don’t have symptoms – so they don’t know they have it.
If you have questions, you should know . . .today! It’s important to your health . . . it’s important to your future!
The Specifics of STDs/STIs
Chlamydia
One of the most common STDs and affects people under the age of 25 at a high rate. Most people who contract this infection will not have symptoms and can infect other people. Many problems such as PID (pelvic inflammatory disorder), infertility, and tubal pregnancy can occur if it is not detected and treated. Chlamydia is treatable with antibiotics.
It is recommended women under the age of 25 and men who have sex with other men should be tested at least yearly.
Gonorrhea (aka “The Clap”)
Men who are infected with gonorrhea may have burning during urination and/or a yellow discharge. Women may not experience any symptoms and be unaware they are infected. As with Chlamydia, problems may occur such as PID, infertility, and tubal pregnancy if the infection is not detected and treated. Gonorrhea is treatable with antibiotics.
It is recommended women under the age of 25 and men who have sex with other men should be tested at least yearly.
