The abortion pill, also known as Mifepristone or RU-486, is prescribed by a doctor prior to ten weeks of pregnancy. This pill is a two part process consisting of taking Mifepristone followed by Misoprostol approximately 24-72 hours later. The first pill is usually given at the prescribing clinic prior to leaving the appointment.

APR involves taking Progesterone (the natural hormone that is present in normal pregnancy) for the first trimester to overcome the effects of Mifepristone. Progesterone is often taken during pregnancy in cases of IVF treatment or with women who have a high risk of miscarriage, so it is considered to be a safe treatment during pregnancy if prescribed properly.
